About Marathon: EVIL
________________________________________

You've played the Marathon Trilogy until your hands spasmed. You risked
friendships and relationships to get to the end. Finally you completed the Marathon Trilogy, and thought your trials were ending.

You were wrong.

It's time for a new era, an EVIL era.

You awake aboard a UESC Ship that has just fallen through an anomaly in space which also sucked in an enemy ship. Suddenly all the weapons on board become armed and activated forcing the crew to abandon ship to the planet below.

Once on the planet below, a new world awaits. A world of EVIL.

"Remember why you loved Marathon the first time you played? Because it scared the wits out of you! The first time a devlin popped out at me, I nearly fell over in my chair. EVIL puts the fright factor back into Marathon!"

Wade Albright, CDROM Editor, MacAddict Magazine

"It rules."

          Randy Reddig, Double Aught Software

"Marathon:EVIL is one of the best Marathon scenarios I've ever played."

Technical Specifications.

Marathon: EVIL is a whole new scenario for Marathon Infinity.

The EVIL Group highly recommends that you patch fresh copies of Marathon Infinity and it's related files. Insert the Marathon Infinity CD in your CDROM Drive, and the EVIL Installer will use it to create Marathon: EVIL on your hard drive.

When installed, you will have:

     Marathon EVIL (application)
     Cursed Map
     Cursed Net Maps
     Cursed Images
     Cursed Sounds
     Cursed Music
     Cursed Data
     Music
     This ReadMe File

Marathon EVIL, once created, is an independent application. It does not require Marathon Infinity or any related files. EVIL creates its own preferences and films.

You may use your maps with EVIL by placing them into the Marathon EVIL folder. They will then be played with EVIL textures, weapons, sounds, and aliens.

This scenario is not like others - it is possible to win it. Getting stuck without immediate death as an answer is not our style. We like to make maps that have tough puzzles and traps, but all of which are escapable. You might encounter a trap where you die immediately, but you'll realize you did something you shouldn't have. We would like to inform you now: you will not encounter these kinds of horrible traps. It is possible to defeat Marathon: EVIL, but it isn't easy.

During netplay, do not use Marathon: EVIL with Marathon Infinity. Verify that all participants are using Marathon: EVIL.

The EVIL Group is in no way affiliated with Bungie. We are not them, and they are not us. Please do not send them email, technical problems, etc. They won't be able to help you.

The EVIL Installer
________________________________________

Installer by Adrian Bourke

The Evil Installer was created from scratch to be a custom program just for the installation of EVIL. After reading many reports from people not being able to get the patchers out there to work, we did this so installation can be simple and worry free.

Please take the time to read the following so that if anything comes up, you will know what to do.
________________________________________

The Quick and Dirty Way:

1: Load the Installer application,
2: Click the Install Evil button,
3: Find the files that it asks you for from your Original Infinity,
4: Select where to save EVIL folder,
5: Wait for it to do its thing,
6: Then go Play. (rebuilding the desktop might be needed to see the new icons)
________________________________________

The Explained Way:

Load the installer application by double clicking on it. A splashscreen will appear which you can dismiss with a single click. This leads to the Main Window.

The Main Window consists of three buttons and some information. The three buttons do the following:

 Install Evil

This will go through the automated sequence of installing Evil fully from the Installation folder to the selected Hard Drive. It will first ask you where to save the EVIL folder, and then it will ask you for three files. The three files are the Original versions from your Infinity CD or Trilogy CD. They are the Application, Shapes, and Sounds. They do not have to be off the CD, but it is easier and saves copying and space if you just select the ones off your CD (unless the installer is already on a CD).

 Custom

The Custom Installation Window consists of four buttons. The four buttons do the following:

 Sounds

This will patch a clean Infinity Sounds file to the new Cursed Sounds file. It will first ask you where is a valid Infinity Sounds file, and then it will ask you where you want the new Cursed Sounds file saved. Make sure you do not save the file in the same folder as the original, it will overwrite the original.

 Shapes

This will patch a clean Infinity Shapes file to the new Cursed Shapes file. It will first ask you where is a valid Infinity Shapes file, and then it will ask you where you want the new Cursed Shapes file saved. Make sure you do not save the file in the same folder as the original, it will overwrite the original.

 Application

This will patch a clean Infinity Application to the new Evil Application. It will first ask you where is a valid Infinity Application, and then it will ask you where you want the Evil Application saved. Make sure you do not save the file in the same folder as the original, it will overwrite the original.

 Back

This will return you back to the main window.

 Quit

This Quits the Installer.

For Those Who Have Low HD Space:

If you are byte deficient, then there is a way you can get most the files out of the installer without using a lot of hard drive space. Currently, the Installer will install all files where you want them, easy and for you. But you can bypass this and do it the hard way.

All Files for installation are in the Installer Files folder within the Installer folder.
You can open this folder, and drag out the following files (if they are in there):

 Cursed Map
 Cursed Images
 Cursed Physics
 Cursed Net Maps
 Cursed Data
 Music

Not included in the small download

Do NOT touch the Data files: App data, Sounds data, Shapes data. These files can only be opened and installed from the installer in the custom area (read above).

Put those listed files where you want EVIL to reside. By doing this, the Installer will not RE-INSTALL these files when you run the Installer. It will only install the patched versions of the Sounds, Shapes, and Application. Thus saving you some disk space for the installation process.

If you have enough disk space for the Install to take place, then by all means do it the Installer way, the easy way. Because, you can always delete off, or archive off, the installer to get that space back on your drive.

________________________________________

WARNINGS:

YOU WILL NEED INPUTSPROCKETLIB 1.1 OR HIGHER TO RUN EVIL!!! If you do not have the latest version, you should get it. The new 1.5 of Marathon Infinity needs this. Contact Apple for the latest Sprocket information.

Make sure you have disk space for the installation. If the installer gives you a -39, then check your disk space left and make sure you have enough. If not, then follow the above instructions for a low disk space install method.

Do not pick a different file than what is asked for. If it asks for an Infinity Sounds file, then pick an Original Infinity Sounds file. If it asks for the Infinity Application, try not to pick some OTHER application, or it will create some really odd thing.

If your going to do a custom install of a single file, make sure that you do not save the new file in the same folder as the original. It will overwrite the original file with the new one (unless this is what you want to do).

You might have to rebuild the desktop file after installation in order to get the new Icon set of EVIL to register on all the support files. To rebuild the desktop, hold down command and option at startup before the Finder is brought up.

You can pick either the Marathon Infinity 1.3 Application or the Marathon Infinity 1.5 Application to install the Evil Application from. The Installer knows which routine to do depending on the two Infinity Versions. What you end up with is EVIL 1.5, which is the latest Infinity adjusted to work as EVIL.

Do not remove any 'data' files from the Installer Files folder. Doing so will guarantee unpredictable results if that operation is performed in the Installer. The data files are the Sounds Data, Shapes Data, and App Data 1.

Make sure you have read this readme on how to use the installer before complaining that something didn't work. Everything works, if you follow the directions.

Hail to the Chief, Baby.

My name:

Randall Frigidman Shaw.

My position:

Graphics Artist, both in a computer and physical creation. I am a Virtual Architect for games. President of IFX computer entertainment, CEO of ShawComp studios, and Project Coordinator for The EVIL Group.

Back in 1994 when Bungie released the demo for Marathon, I became infatuated with it's design. Being the hottest thing around since Pathways into Darkness, this game brought new meaning to first person realities in the computer for Macintosh. I was intrigued and thrilled, horrified and baffled, at the complexity of the levels that I explored while playing Marathon. Complexity...

The levels of Marathon had a feeling. A real good feeling. A feeling that was evil and sinister to the well-being of the player. I had started to grasp how the levels were being made at the end of playing the demo. I dived in with a hex editor to see if I could figure it out and failed, thinking my Pathways map making skills would have come in handy. The map file was really different and I couldn't figure it out.

Enter Pfhorte.

I grabbed at this map editor the instant it came out and started hacking away at levels. When Pfhorte first came out, all it could do was edit a preexisting level. I then made a complete redo of each and every net map in the Marathon game. I sent it out onto the newly found Internet (new to me since I had just discovered the net's existence a month after Marathon came out). I got some eMail back regarding it, and it was enough to make me like what I did for people.

Pfhorte progressed, but not fast enough for me. I was eagerly awaiting making maps that are new and fresh, and kept pushing Pfhorte to the limits. Learning all it's quirks and oddities. I successfully created one of the first ever Marathon maps that was of complete new design. This got me a lot of eMails... around 100 to be exact (that was a lot back then). Then I moved onto lighting... one of the first to create a full new level complete with lighting. This got me more recognition.

I ended making Marathon maps when Marathon2:Durandal demo came out. I was like "Water? Whoah..." Pfhorte was quickly made to work for M2. I made my first maps called The Pools, later to be renamed to Radiant and Rancid Pools. You guessed it... it had liquids in it. After I released these, I was pummeled with eMail on how I got Pfhorte to work right in making these levels. It was a rush for me, being someone who had never gotten any attention like this ever.

Pfhorte progressed and so did I. With each new revision of Pfhorte I became his personal tester and made a new map with each new version. Each map got better and better. The first net map that I made though that caught a lot of peoples eye was Pfhor Winds. Today, that level is one of my favorites. Simple in design, but great on flow, I find it to be better than some of my more recent net maps.

Enter Siege of Nor'Korh.

I made Siege of Nor'Korh (a fairly large solo adventure, complete with terminal graphics and chapters) about a year ago. This went over really well. Everyone was downloading this, because it was something made by the Frigidman. I was getting tons of eMail about how nice it was and how well worth the time to download it was. I was really happy. I had figured, that was going to be the capstone to my era of Marathon and be done with it all and rest in the pleasure of knowing that I made something so liked. So I thought...

Marathon:Infinity went into production. I was asked to do a few things for Bungie because of my reputation for being a good map maker. At first, they wanted me to do the demo level that would be shown at MacWorld expo to present the coming of Marathon:Infinity. Due to a slight delay in production, my level was not used because it was made with the new texture set, which wasn't ready for the expo. So I moth-balled the level, but then they had asked me to work on some other projects concerning Marathon. I eagerly accepted because after all, they were the guys behind what I had spent about two years of my life doing.

Enter Marathon: EVIL.

From the day that Infinity was announced to be a reality, I formed a group to create the ever demanded sequel to Siege of Nor'Korh. Being privileged to beta test Forge, I was able to start work on Marathon:EVIL way before Marathon:Infinity ever came out. Also, by getting a few map makers who were also on the beta team, I was able to work with some of the others before hand to get things rolling. I had Anvil also and that's where everything started. I made a lot of the new stuff for EVIL before Infinity was released.

Now. The time has finally come for me to say that THIS is going to be my final contribution to the Marathon Community. This will be the end to the Siege of Nor'Korh scenario as far as I am concerned. It's not that I do not like Marathon anymore, nor that I am sick of making maps, it's the fact that the Marathon level engine is so limited and I am moving onto better programs to make levels. So I will still be around, but no longer around for making Marathon related things. I think Marathon:EVIL is the most I could ever do, which I couldn't have done without all the help from The EVIL Group.

I just hope you enjoy this as much as we enjoyed making it for you. A lot of time, sweat, and stress have gone into making this for you. I ask that you try to refrain from being a total jerk about it if you do not like our efforts put forth for your enjoyment. We did all this for free, absolutely.

So in parting I say, have fun. I sure hope that this is one helluva an adventure that everyone will love and cherish just like one of the actual Bungie Marathon trilogy. One could say that this is Marathon4, but we won't.

I dedicate Marathon: EVIL to Puff, my fat 22 pound cat.

FAQ
________________________________________

Will EVIL work with the Marathon Trilogy version of Infinity?

Yes. The installer will automatically update your version to the latest Infinity version, 1.5. You do not need to do anything special, it all happens behind the scenes.

Can I play EVIL with Marathon 2?

No.

Where can I get Marathon: EVIL

You can find a complete list of sites at http://www.ntbbs.org/evil

Is it correct that I must enter my serial number over again into Marathon:EVIL?

No. Since version 1.5 of Infinity does not require a serial number, you do not need to reenter it into Marathon: EVIL. Bungie has removed the serial number requirement. Wasn't that nice of them?

Can maps be made for EVIL with Forge? and use the new wacky, wicked weapons?

All of Evil was made with Forge. We might be putting out a patcher to patch Forge to what we used (i.e. weapons names and creature names correct). but only on high demand will we do this.

Any net maps that absolutely rock, but not by FrigidMan?

Every Mapmaker in The EVIL Group was carefully hand chosen by FrigidMan. His watchful eye and somewhat warped sense of reality kept an eye on the process. He wouldn't do this if it didn't rock. Refer to the chapter in this readme entitled 'The EVIL Group' for individual map credits.

When was EVIL started?

Before Infinity was even in beta format. It was started with early beta versions of Forge, and worked on through Infinity release until now.

How did you get Anvil to work?

It just worked. Knowing how to use it helps. ;-)

Do you have a different version of Forge to make EVIL with?

Yes we do, and only by high demand will we give out a patcher for it.

Will we be able to make maps for EVIL and distribute them?

Yes. You can keep the EVIL in all of us by supporting it with new additions. It is not hard making an EVIL compatible map file. If you're really lucky, The EVIL Group will try and recommend it.

Can you actually hold a pistol and Fusion gun at the same time?

No, that screenshot was a joke to see if anyone was paying attention. Got you didn't it?

What would happen if I play net EVIL with someone who is using plain old Infinity?

You will most likely crash. Since the Infinity person will not have the appropriate shapes. Thus when marathon calls for something that is not there, it will crash. Make sure both sides have the same files.

How is Bungie contributing to EVIL?

Just testing, and making sure everything is kosher.

Is Bungie paying you to make EVIL?

Nope.

If a tree falls in the forest, and there's no one to hear it, will a bizarre cult group then sacrifice themselves to the "Tree People"?

Most likely.

If so, will their fruit-loop leader then turn out to be from San Antonio, and leave behind video tapes which prove that -- where you and I have a "brain" -- this man had a "Whack-A-Mole" game?

No... I dont think so on this one, since having a wack a mole game would require batteries, and where on earth would he stick them? (and no.. get your head out of the gutter).

The EVIL Group.
